Like-for-like, or a considered upgrade. We look at age, tank condition, repair history and how you actually use hot water before recommending anything.
Most replacements happen for one of two reasons: the system has failed and there is no choice, or it is old enough that replacing it on your terms beats replacing it on its terms.
The two are different jobs, and we handle both across the Sunshine Coast. An emergency replacement is constrained by what can be obtained today. A planned one is an opportunity to fix whatever was wrong with the last arrangement, whether that was capacity, position or running cost.
Signs a system is near the end
Rust staining on the casing, or water pooling under the tank rather than dripping from the relief valve. Both usually mean the cylinder is going or gone.
Running out of hot water when nothing about the household has changed, particularly if it has come on gradually.
A second or third fault within a short period. Components in a tank age together, so a system that has started failing tends to keep failing.
Age past the point most systems of that type get replaced, generally somewhere around seven to ten years for storage, though this varies with water quality and whether the anode was ever changed.
None of these is a countdown. They are reasons to plan rather than reasons to panic.
Emergency replacement versus planned
An emergency replacement is decided by availability. You take a system that fits the space and the connections and can be obtained today, and the comparison of running costs happens afterwards, if at all.
A planned replacement is decided by suitability. You can change type, correct the size, move the unit somewhere more sensible, and get more than one quote.
The practical implication: if your system is clearly near the end, the cheapest version of what is coming is the one you organise rather than the one that organises you.
Like-for-like, or something different
Like-for-like is the fastest and usually the cheapest, because the water, gas or electrical connections are already where they need to be. For a household that was happy with the old system, it is often exactly right.
It is worth pausing if the old system was undersized, if you have solar power that a heat pump could use, if the position always made servicing awkward, or if the running cost has been a complaint. Those are the cases where the extra work at replacement time pays back.
Changing energy source is the biggest step and needs the most checking: gas capacity, switchboard capacity, outdoor space, roof orientation. We look at all of it before recommending, because a recommendation that ignores your property is a sales pitch.
Sizing comes from how the household uses hot water, not from the size of the house. Occupants, bathrooms, whether anyone takes baths, and whether hot water gets drawn in two places at once.
Both mistakes cost. Undersized means running out. Oversized means keeping more water hot around the clock than anyone uses. Since a replacement is the one moment where correcting this is free, it is worth five minutes of conversation.
The old unit is isolated, drained and removed, and taken away for disposal. Valves and fittings are replaced rather than reused, since they wear and are cheap relative to the damage a failed one causes.
The new system is installed, connected, filled and commissioned, which means checking it actually heats to temperature and that the relief and tempering valves behave as they should. You should be shown where the isolation valve is and what the system needs from you.
You should also be left with the manufacturer's documentation, because that is what governs the product warranty.

A straightforward like-for-like swap is usually a few hours: isolate, drain, remove, install, connect, commission. It takes longer if the system is changing type, moving position, or if the electrical or gas side needs work. Access is the other variable, and it is the one most often underestimated from a photograph.
Do you take the old system away?
Removal and disposal of the old unit is a normal part of a replacement. It is worth confirming on any quote you compare, because an old cylinder is heavy, awkward and not free to dispose of, and being left with one in the yard is an annoying way to find out it was excluded.
Can I change to a different type of system?
Often, and a failure is the natural moment to consider it. What decides it is what the property already has: a heat pump needs somewhere outside with airflow and condensate drainage, gas needs a supply with adequate capacity, solar needs suitable roof space. We look at the connections first because they rule options in or out faster than cost does.
Will a new system be the same size?
Not necessarily, and it is worth asking. If you have been running out, the old one may have been undersized for how the household actually uses hot water now. If the household has shrunk, you may be heating more water than you use. A replacement is the one moment where correcting that costs nothing extra.
What warranty comes with it?
RCM covers workmanship for 12 months on systems it supplies and installs. Beyond that the unit is covered by its manufacturer's warranty, and those terms vary by brand and model, so the booklet supplied with your system is the one that governs. Ask us to confirm both before you commit and we will put them on the quote in writing.
Should I replace before it fails?
There is a real argument for it once a system is clearly near the end. A planned replacement is cheaper than an emergency one, lets you choose rather than take what is available today, and avoids the day or two without hot water. Against that, you are retiring something that still works. It is a judgement, not a rule.
