Groundwater, Farming and Rural Supply in the Glass House Mountains
The Glass House Mountains district takes its name from the volcanic peaks Captain Cook sighted and named in 1770, and the surrounding country (Glass House Mountains township, Beerburrum and the small-crop farms between them) has been agricultural since the early twentieth century. Pineapples in particular defined the area, alongside small crops and, historically, extensive pine plantation forestry. The landform is national park and protected peaks surrounded by a working rural landscape, with a growing rural residential and commuter population served by the North Coast railway line.
The defining service factor is water. A large proportion of properties draw from bores or rainwater tanks rather than reticulated supply. Bore water in the district frequently carries dissolved iron and minerals; when heated, iron precipitates out, staining fixtures, discolouring the first hot draw of the day and depositing scale on the element. Mineral content also consumes sacrificial anodes at rates the manufacturer's schedule never anticipated, so a system replaced without water treatment or the correct anode specification simply repeats the failure.
Working properties add a second complication. Sheds, packing areas, second dwellings and irrigation can share the pump and supply line with the house, so pressure fluctuates and total hot water demand is higher than the household headcount suggests. And with no reticulated natural gas anywhere in the district, gas systems here run on bottles, with placement and clearances to plan around farm buildings and vehicle access.
RCM Hot Water responds by treating water and demand as part of the job: source tested before an anode is specified, filtration recommended where the bore warrants it, whole-property demand counted in the sizing, and LPG planned for the block, so hot water systems in Glass House Mountains last the years they are supposed to.
